# Describe your product

> Write one line about what you're building, let AI draft the full description, and approve it — everything else in the product is built on it.

Before Vector can find your competitors or research anything on your behalf, it needs to know what you're building. That's what this step is for, and it's the one piece of work nothing else can be done without: the approved description is the context every AI feature in the product runs against.

It takes less than it sounds. One line is enough to start — AI writes the rest, and you correct and approve it.

## Write one line, get a description

Open **My product**. The first step on the screen, **Description**, is the only required one.

  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/vectordocs/hMKojhc26pnkTmuV/images/getting-started/describe-your-product.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=hMKojhc26pnkTmuV&q=85&s=74f9f3ad72eadc7e7e363e1733cc8219" alt="The My product screen with the Description step selected, the Enrich the profile row of research steps with two done, the Target market set to Worldwide, and the Approved tab showing the product description" width="1691" height="1305" data-path="images/getting-started/describe-your-product.png" />
</Frame>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Set your target market">
    **Target market** is the countries or regions your product is aimed at. It feeds the AI draft, and competitor search and every research step inherit it. Leave it on **Worldwide** if you aren't targeting a particular market.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Write what you're building">
    On the **Human input** tab, describe your product in your own words. A single line will do, the way you'd put it to a colleague — for example, "an AI notetaker with agents for teams".
  </Step>

  <Step title="Let AI draft the description">
    Click **Next — AI writes the description**. AI expands your line into a full description grounded in it and in your target market, and the draft opens on the **AI draft** tab.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Edit and approve">
    The draft is a starting point, not a verdict. Fix anything that isn't right — the wording, the audience, a feature that doesn't belong — and approve it. The approved version is what the rest of Vector reads; until then it's still a draft.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Drafting needs an [AI key](/getting-started/connect-a-provider): until one is saved, the screen shows **needs a key in Settings** next to the button.

## Enrich the profile

Below the description, **Enrich the profile** offers optional research steps that build on it: **Domain scout**, **Landscape mapper**, **Market sizer**, **ICP & personas**, **Problem framer**, **Positioning**, **Metrics advisor** and **Trend scout**. None of them is required, and you can run them in any order. A counter next to the heading shows how many are done.

Each step reads the description and every step completed before it, so the profile compounds: the more of it you fill in, the more context competitor search and modeling have to work with.

## What depends on it

The approved description isn't something you write once and forget. It's the input to:

* **[Finding competitors](/competitors/add-competitors)** — AI searches for products that match your description, so a vague description returns vague competitors
* **[Deep research](/competitors/competitor-dossier)** — a competitor teardown is written against your product, not in the abstract
* **[Comparing features](/competitors/compare-competitors)** — your own column in the comparison comes from what your description says you do

Rewriting the description later is normal — the market teaches you things — but everything researched before a rewrite was framed against the old version.

For how the description feeds the rest of the chain, see [How Vector works](/getting-started/how-vector-works).
