# Set up your workspace

> Work through the ten setup steps, from your AI key to your first competitor comparison and economics model.

<Note> Already signed in? Start here. If not, [create your account](/account-and-team/signing-in) first — it takes a minute, and Vector sets up your first workspace as you go. </Note>

Everything in Vector lives inside a workspace: one workspace is one company or product, with its own [competitors](/competitors/add-competitors), models, numbers and [AI key](/getting-started/connect-a-provider).

## Create a workspace

When you sign up, Vector creates your first workspace and takes you into it — so you can go straight to the setup guide below.

For what a workspace holds, how to create another one, switch between them and how to bring your team in, see [Workspaces](/account-and-team/workspaces).

## Start with the setup guide

You can work through Vector section by section from the left menu. The easier way to start is the **Setup guide**: a single page that launches every step in the right order and shows you how far you've got. Ten steps, seven of them required — from connecting your AI key to your first competitor comparison and economics model.

Open it from **Setup guide** at the top of the left menu.

</Frame>

While required steps are left, Vector opens this page for you when you sign in. You can navigate away at any time, and once the required steps are done, you land on your product page instead.

## How the checklist works

Each step tells you what Vector can do for you and gives you an **Open** action that takes you to the real screen for that job. The checklist never asks you to do the work twice: it links you to **Settings**, to your product description, to **Competitors**, and so on, rather than repeating those screens inside itself.

Progress is worked out from the actual state of your workspace, not from clicking around the checklist. Add a competitor directly from the **Competitors** screen and step 3 is marked complete anyway. Switch to another workspace and the progress recalculates for that one.

<Note>
  **Steps 1 to 7 are required.** They form the progress counter and the "ready" state. Steps 8 to 10 are optional extras, shown separately, and aren't counted in your progress.
</Note>

## Start with your AI key

Step 1 is adding your own AI key, because nearly everything else runs on it: describing your idea, finding competitors, building profiles, comparison, [monitoring](/monitoring/set-up-monitoring) and research. Until a valid key is saved, every step that needs AI appears locked, with a prompt to add it. Steps that don't need AI — adding a competitor by hand, setting up channels — stay available. [Connect an AI provider](/getting-started/connect-a-provider) covers it in full.

## The setup steps

<Steps>
  <Step title="Add your AI key">
    Connect your own AI key so that every Vector tool runs under your account and your limits. Opens **Settings**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Describe your idea">
    Write your idea in plain words. Vector drafts a detailed concept — problem, audience, value, key features — which you edit and approve. The approved concept is the basis for every step after this one.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find competitors">
    Vector finds competitors based on your concept and helps you assemble a shortlist.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Build a full competitor profile">
    For each competitor, a dossier: strengths and weaknesses, features, pricing, and their full set of public resources.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Compare side by side and get a backlog">
    Put competitors next to each other feature by feature, and decide what belongs in your own product. The step opens the **Coverage** view of the feature catalog — see [Compare competitors](/competitors/compare-competitors).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Put competitors under monitoring">
    When a competitor ships something new, you get a notification and the comparison updates.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Model unit economics and pricing (WIP)">
    Work out token economics and cost of service, assemble pricing packages, and project where the numbers go as you grow.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set up marketing channels and conversions (WIP, optional)">
    Pick acquisition channels and placements, set expected funnel conversions, and see what each channel implies for customer acquisition.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Size the market (WIP, optional)">
    Vector researches market size and segments for your concept, so you can see the ceiling and prioritize.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Build your backlog and roadmap (optional)">
    Pull the conclusions from comparison, monitoring and research into a prioritized backlog and a first roadmap.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What counts as done

A step is complete when the corresponding thing exists in your workspace:

| Step                    | Complete when                                                                 |
| ----------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 1. AI key | A valid AI key is saved in the workspace |
| 2. Idea description | Your product description is approved |
| 3. Competitors | At least one competitor exists |
| 4. Competitor profile   | At least one competitor has a filled-in dossier                               |
| 5. Side-by-side | A comparison of at least two competitors exists, with backlog recommendations |
| 6. Monitoring | At least one competitor is under monitoring |
| 7. Unit economics | At least one economics or pricing model has been created |
| 8. Marketing channels | At least one channel or placement is set up with conversions |
| 9. Market size          | A market sizing result is saved                                               |
| 10. Backlog and roadmap | A prioritized feature backlog exists                                          |

## After the required steps

Once steps 1 to 7 are complete, the page shows a summary of what you've set up, whether or not you did the optional steps. You can collapse the guide and come back to it from the menu whenever you want — it doesn't disappear after you finish.
