# What Vector is

> Understand what Vector does for a founder and in what order to use it.

You have an idea, or an early product, and two questions that never stop: where do we stand against the competition, and do the numbers work? Answering either one usually means a scattered pile of browser tabs, a spreadsheet, and a lot of manual re-checking every time a [competitor](/competitors/add-competitors) ships something.

Vector takes that path from idea to competitive product and puts it in one place.

## What Vector does for you

You write one line about what you're building. Vector drafts it into a full product description, finds your competitors, researches each of them, and gathers what the market offers into one catalog of features — each marked with whether you have it. From that catalog you pick what belongs in your own product and prepare it for development. Meanwhile Vector watches your competitors, and when one of them changes something, you get a notification in your inbox.

Your part is short: the line about your product, the competitor search, and the research on each competitor. [How Vector works](/getting-started/how-vector-works) walks through the whole chain and the terms you'll meet on every screen.

## What you need to start

One thing: [**your own AI key**](/getting-started/connect-a-provider). Every AI-powered part of Vector — drafting your product description, competitor search, research, comparison — runs on your key, under your own account and limits. Until you add it, those steps stay locked.
